Marfa, TX

The trip that started it all — in July 2021 we set out on a roadtrip to Los Angeles with a pit stop in Marfa, TX. Except no one told us it wasn’t a good idea to go to Marfa on a Tuesday.

We arrived at night. It was dark and the hotel we booked, The Thunderbird, was abandoned - they left a key for us in the mailbox at the office. We were nervous. It was near the train tracks and we were driving a brand new car. Would it be ok overnight? We weren’t sure. We ventured out for dinner at another nearby hotel (Hotel St. George) and sat at the bar, drank a margarita and conspired to start a travel blog.

We went to bed early-ish, with one eye open and barely slept a wink that night between our nervousness for our location and the sound of the train next to our window. We were so excited to see the art galleries and explore Marfa, but when we woke up the next day, we found out everything is closed on Tuesdays in the summer because it’s just too darn hot & not many people decide to visit Marfa in the middle of the summer on a Tuesday, except us.

We did manage to find a great coffee spot called Do Your Thing before walking around town and discovering every spot we wanted to visit was closed. We also stumbled across The Water Stop and had the best green chile cheeseburger of our lives.

Our last stop was at the PRADA art installation on the way out of town for a photo op. We’d definitely come back, just not on a Tuesday in the middle of summer…
